An Appointment with Me

It’s Winter, although it doesn’t really feel like it to this Mid-West girl living in Central Virginia.  But, it is and it is feeling like it.

Those days.

Do you ever have those days?  This week, I’ve had a couple of those days.  Those days where you don’t want to go anywhere.  You want to snack on anything with extra calories.  Doing your makeup seems like a dissertation.  Even your socks feel a little tight.   And, those days don’t just take your waste-line and your motivation!  But, somehow they seem to take on the characteristics of the grey clouds above… sucking you in to make life seem smaller.

Maybe it is Holiday-hangover?

I’m not sure if it is the clouds or perspective that tend to feel like they are closing in, but I’m encouraging you not to let the Winter Blues hide you from being a truth-seeker.  Don’t let the long days put a halt to introspection.  Don’t let change discourage you.  Don’t allow this season overwhelm you and intimidate your unconventional spirit.

I am familiar with the mindset shift that can happen when the walls seem to be closing in.  Professionally and personally, I also know that life is full of too many possibilities to look at life from inside a box of expectations.

Forget the box.

So, what can you do to make today go from a no-makeup-kind-of-day to a get-out-the-wand-and-make-it-wavy-hair-kind-of-day?  For me, it’s forgetting the box, the expectations, and remind myself to take a breath.  It may sound cliché, but breath brings true life back into perspective.

Sometimes, too much dreaming, too much reflecting, too much reading, too much listening, too much planning, too much living inside the box of personal expectations and what could be just needed to be brought back to the reason you’re doing it all.

Being.

Especially over the first couple of months of the year, we tend to spend a lot of time thinking about who we want to be, what we want to do and how we can accomplish either-or both.  All of that thinking can leave us in a place of doubt, instead of serenity and conscious confidence.

I’m all for ideas, lists, introspection, change, inspiration and just playing going for it.  Bring on the resolutions and the crisp new planners!!!  But, learning to listen to pause has to be just as important as working to get where you going.

Breath.

The next time you’re having one of those days, I hope you can remember to breathe a little.  Give yourself the grace to get where you’re going.  Allow yourself to cherish the process along the way.  Allow yourself a no-checklists, accomplishment-free and agenda-free zone.

For twenty minutes, an hour or a day, write in your calendar, “an appointment with me”.  It’ll be the most important appointment of your day!

Allow yourself the time to live outside the box – or in spite of it.  Allow yourself moments of no perspective.  Allow yourself a mental breather.  Allow yourself fresh air or surround yourself with a favorite scent.  Allow yourself time to count 1-2-3.

After your appointment, if you tend to put yourself in a box on a regular basis, allow yourself to take back ownership of it!  You may need a simple redesign and make it look like you want it to look!!  It is YOUR box … Winter or not.

There are so many good things that can come from new seasons … let one of them be you!

Beginner’s Guide: A Tip for Creating Social Media Content

Do you want to create content for your social media platform or blog, but don’t know where to start?  One simple resource you can use to be inspired, is the calendar!

Here are a couple benefits of using a calendar for inspiration and/or specific content:

  • Someone has already thought of the topic, take advantage of it!
  • Joining in with trending topic can increase your possibility for new followers.
  • Using a holiday or celebration doesn’t have to be literal – don’t be afraid to stretch your imagination.
  • By using “topics” that others may also use, studying popular hashtags will maximize your content’s reach.
  • By incorporating an idea/topic/event/date, you may integrate something you may not normally use… helping to you know your audience better and seeking out new thoughts/ideas.
Remember, building a social market is about using creative, consistent content to engage an online audience.  Although you want to remain within your brand and voice when creating content, experimenting with content allows you the chance to relate and communicate with varying, potential, and hopefully growing, audiences!!  –  Darla, The Social Market, LLC
